On the heels of another banner season, the PBA Board of Governors holds its annual planning session in Sydney, Australia starting Monday, looking to scale more heights and continue to play its role as provider of highest form of sports entertainment in the land.
Incoming board chairman Ramon Segismundo of Meralco, outgoing chair Robert Non of Barangay Ginebra and league commissioner Chito Salud lead the delegation departing for this Down Under city famous for its great harbors, the Opera House, The Rocks, the Port Jackson sunken valley, the Parramatta River and more.
The first order of business is to formally vote into office the new chair who then presides the proceedings.
Segismundo, a Meralco senior vice president in charge of the company’s human resources department, assumes the PBA chairmanship in his fourth year in the league or since Meralco took over the Sta. Lucia Realty franchise in 2010.
He’s armed with a thick portfolio in getting the baton from Non.
He’s got industrial engineering and MBA degrees at UP, and he’s been managing people at Meralco for a long while now – the same position he held at GlaxoSmithKline’s Asia Pacific region before joining the country’s giant power company.
“I love pressure and I love challenge,” said Segismundo, confident he can sustain the giant gains the league achieved in the past seasons.
“I draw inspiration from the fans, the board and supportive team owners,” he also said, hastening to add his chairmanship is supported by the Philippine basketball patron Manny V. Pangilinan.
He’s immediate goals include improving their product with innovative programs, solidifying partnership with the national team and the national cage federation, and laying the groundwork for a long-planned league expansion.
“We’ll put in innovative programs. To start, we’re holding games in Manila, Cebu and Davao on opening day in line with the theme ‘One PBA, One Philippines,” he said.
“For the 25th All-Stars, we’ll do something that has not been done before. It would be unprecedented,” he also said. “It’s going to be a very exciting year. We’ll continue if not surpass what we have achieved.”
And he stressed full support to the national team.
“We’ll try to forge a united basketball nation built around the PBA and built around a synergy among the PBA, Gilas Pilipinas and SBP especially as we go to Barcelona (for the World Cup) and Seoul (for the Asian Games) in 2014,” he said.
“We’ve seen how basketball unified the nation in the last FIBA Asia Championship. And we’ve seen what the Filipino players can do,” he added.
As he hopes for another banner season for the league, he also looks forward to see his team – the Meralco Bolts — nail an elusive first championship.
“We’ve undergone a massive overhaul. We’ve got the basic ingredients. It’s now a matter of building chemistry and teamwork. We’re working on that and I have full faith on coach Ryan (Gregorio), the management and my colleagues at Meralco,” he said.
He didn’t get past the barangay leagues and college departmental basketball level, but he surely knows the game and the business.
“I trained under Fely Fajardo (in his PE class at the University of the Philippines). I was good only at charging and blocking,” he also said in jest.
“My specialty is human resources. Managing team is managing people. I have great passion for basketball. At the end of the day, it’s managing people,” he said. (SB)
