The PBA’s 39th season already formally began last Sunday via the league’s Annual Draft. But here’s a better-late-than-never last look at last season’s top players, statistics-wise.
SCORING
Globalport’s Gary David topped the scoring department for the fourth straight season with his 18.8 ppg average in 31 games for the Batang Pier.
David, who has actually led the locals in scoring in seven of the last 10 conferences, won the season scoring title over Barangay Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa who averaged 17.2 ppg in 41 outings for the Kings.
Rounding out the season’s Top 5 local scorers were Most Improved Player Nino Canaleta of Air21 (16.7 ppg), David’s Globalport teammate, Sol Mercado (16.2 ppg) and Philippine Cup Best Player of the Conference Jayson Castro of Talk ‘N Text (14.5 ppg).
David is the first player to lead the locals in scoring four seasons in a row since Asi Taulava did the trick with Talk ‘N Text from 2001 up to 2005.
REBOUNDING, SHOTBLOCKS
As it turned out, the Rookie of the Year race wasn’t the only race eventual winner Calvin Abueva of Alaska and runner-up June Mar Fajardo of Petron Blaze figured in as both freshmen also were battling for the season’s rebounding title among locals.
Until the very last game of the season, both players were at it even though Fajardo was the only one playing among the two.
In Game 7 of the 2013 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals between the Boosters and eventual champion San Mig Coffee last Oct. 25, Fajardo needed 15 rebounds to snare the rebounding title from Abueva who had already finished the season with a 9.37 rpg norm after his team, Alaska, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Mixers.
Fajardo did just that – finished with exactly 15 boards – to end his season with a 9.40 rpg average and be No. 1 overall among all locals for the season.
The 6-foot-10 former University of Cebu standout also led the locals this past season in shotblocks with his 1.3 bpg average, making him the first rookie in 17 years to end the season No. 1 in both rebounding and shotblocks among locals, or since Marlou Aquino did the trick with Barangay Ginebra in 1996 with his 9.0 rpg and 2.8 bpg averages.
Fajardo also needed to score 26 points in that Game 7 to beat Abueva (12.25 ppg) for No. 1 in scoring among rookies this past season but he ended with just 20 to finish with a 12.13 ppg average behind Abueva.
ASSISTS
In assists, Globalport’s Sol Mercado ended up No. 1 among all locals this season with his 6.9 average. The scoring and assists leader in the Philippine Cup while still playing for Meralco, Mercado edged Bolts teammate Chris Ross (6.6 apg) and Governors Cup assists leader LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra (5.8 apg) for the assists title.
STEALS
Ross, now with Petron Blaze after a recent trade, topped the steals department among locals for the third straight season with his 1.7 spg average in 42 games. He is the first player to be the top ball thief among locals for three straight seasons since Talk ‘N Text’s Ryan Reyes did the trick from 2007 to 2010.
Finishing at No. 2 in steals among locals was Tenorio with his 1.5 spg while San Mig Coffee’s Mark Barroca was third with his 1.4.
FG%
San Mig Coffee’s Rafi Reavis regained the FG% department after nine seasons, finishing with a 56.7% clip (83 of 147) from the field in his 60 games for the Mixers.
Now entering his 12th season in the league, Reavis previously led all locals in FG% in 2003 with his 58.4% (275 of 471) while still playing for Coca-Cola.
2PT FG%
2013 PBA Governors Cup Finals MVP Marc Pingris of San Mig Coffee topped the two-point shooting field goal department among locals this past season with his 56.7% (191 of 337).
It was the second straight season Pingris emerged No. 1 in this department and fourth time in the last nine seasons.
3PT FG%
Marcio Lassiter of Petron Blaze was red-hot from the three-point region this past season with his 44.3% clip, making 90 of his 203 attempts. It’s the highest 3-point percentage over the last three seasons, and highest since Mike Hrabak hit 45.5% (61 of 134) with Rain or Shine during the 2009-10 season.
FT%
Talk ‘N Text team captain Jimmy Alapag finished the season No. 1 in free throw shooting with his career-best 87.7% clip, making 108 of his 123 free throws. It was the second time in the last three seasons the 2011 league MVP topped the FT shooting department. (FM)
