Two teams coming out of confidence-building wins square off Friday in the 2014 PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup as Rain or Shine and Barako Bull both look to score back-to-back victories.
Rain or Shine was the first team to put a dent on the Petron Blaze Boosters’ season as it scored a 99-85 overtime victory last Saturday behind the career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds of Jervy Cruz, and the late-game heroics of Paul Lee in the extra five minutes.
“We just had to grind it out,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. “We played a bad first half but we made up for it in the second half. We couldn’t get the breaks from the refs, so we had to create our own breaks.”
It was a nail-biting victory for the Elasto Painters as they ended their two game skid.
For their part, the Energy finally ended a six-game slide as they sizzled from rainbow country, drilling 14 three-pointers, to turn back Meralco, 99-86, last Sunday.
It was a total team effort for Barako Bull as seven players scored in double digits led by Denok Miranda’s 17.
An emotional coach Bong Ramos faced the media after the game, and said, “Kung titingnan nyo, close games lahat ng laro namin. Ang hinihintay ko lang is kung hanggang kailan pipilitin ng players i-push yung sarili nila kahit natatalo kami.”
“The players were really pushing themselves. Sabi ko sa mga players, don’t give up kasi mabibiyak din yan. And tonight, we were able to break the rock.
“We were able to get over the hump. Hopefully, na-break na talaga namin yung rock, or may ibe-break na naman kaming bagong rock. But that is only one game and hopefully, we continue to upset teams,” he added.
Game time is at 5:45 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Coincidentally, the two teams have previously met last December 2, when the E-Painters trumped the Energy, 91-83, with Rain or Shine dealing Barako Bull its first loss of the season.
TY Tang, JR Quinahan, and Jeff Chan combined for 38 points in the win, as Rain or Shine survived a 23-point night from Willie Miller. (RL)
