The Alaska Aces won their previous meeting but the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers seem to have established momentum and are ready for a big fightback as the two teams meet again in the PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Friday.

The Mixers are coming off back-to-back victories while the Aces are struggling with a single win in their last four outings as they set out for their rematch at 8 p.m.

Coach Tim Cone and his troops are out to sustain their mini-romp in a bid to tie Globalport (4-5) at fifth place while coach Luigi Trillo and his chargers hope to win their last game in year 2013 and bump off San Mig at sixth place.

The Aces currently share seventh spot with the Barako Bull Energy and the Meralco Bolts at 3-6.

“We can be better,” said Trillo, confident they can make a run sooner than later.

“But we have to improve,” he’s quick to add, pointing out the eight turnovers they committed in the third quarter and 24 free throws they yielded in the final canto in their last game against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

He insists they have to raise the level of their game several notches higher especially as they’re up against a San Mig side that has sparked a turnaround in its own campaign in the all-Filipino tourney.

“They have that big lineup that we need to worry about. They have a ton of weapons,” said Trillo.

After a woeful 1-5 start in the tourney, the Mixers have gotten over the hump, winning their last two games against Barako Bull and GlobalPort.

James Yap banged in a three-pointer and Mark Barroca pulled a steal before hitting two charities inside the last 25 seconds as the Mixers scored their first back-to-back wins in the season while denying the Batang Pier a fourth straight victory.

“It’s still a struggle for us right now. The guys are a little worn-out and it seems like years that we got back-to-back wins,” said Cone.

“We’re lucky James came up with that huge trey. Then there’s Ping’s defense. He sacrificed himself to do the dirty job,” Cone added.

The Aces are still out to get the monkey off their back.

One good vibe going for them is their triumph over the Mixers in their initial faceoff on Nov. 22.

With a noble goal then, Alaska came out a determined lot and drubbed San Mig Coffee, 84-80.

That’s the Aces’ first win in PBA Season 39, and the four-point victory meant an additional package the Alaska team donated to victims of super typhoon Yolanda.

“The company has already donated P40 million to our unfortunate kababayans. But since it’s Mr. Wilfred Uytengsu’s 52nd birthday, he thought of giving more – P52,000 for every point that we won,” said Alaska top executive Joaqui Trillo after the match.

Behind a steadier and smoother game, the Aces led by as many as 19 before having to fend off the Mixers’ endgame charge. (SB)
