Barako Bull fought with a great determination and beat Petron Blaze in a battle down the stretch, carving out a 92-88 win to gain solo fifth place in , PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

The combination JC Intal, Denok Miranda, Willie Miller, Dorian Pena and Rico Maierhofer did the job at the finish as the Energy pulled the rug from under the Boosters and thus enhanced their bid to land a spot in the post-elimination round play.

With their third win in their last four games, the Energy  improved to 5-7, half-a-game up on joint sixth placers GlobalPort, Alaska, Meralco and San Mig Coffee at 4-7.

The Boosters, meanwhile, suffered a third loss in their last four outings and moved down to joint second  with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at 8-3.

“As I’ve said, we will continue to make surprises,” said Barako coach Bong Ramos after the upset, their first over Petron in an all-Filipino matchup dating back to 2006.

“We came out with different kinds of defenses and I have to thank our players for pushing themselves,” Ramos also said.

The Energy really toughened up on defense at endgame, holding the Boosters down to three points in the last 3:27 of play.

Petron Blaze was limited to 17 in the payoff period after making at least 21 in each of the first three quarters.

Barako Bull surged ahead to stay at 89-85 on an eight-to-nothing binge by Intal, Pena and Miller.

After Alex Cabagnot buried three straight charities, the Energy recovered a loose ball with Miranda setting up Intal for a slam as Barako took a 91-88 lead with 27.1 ticks left.

The Boosters eventually yielded the match as Chriz Lutz was caught stepping on the line before nailing what could have been a game-tying three-pointer.

Miranda split from the line with 7.9 seconds to go for the final count.

Pena, a major force in Barako’s turnaround from six straight losses, had another key performance with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Intal and Miranda combined for 28 markers, including 13 in the final canto.

The Boosters, though continuing to play minus Junmar Fajardo, actually held sway most of the way, taking the half at 47-36.

They remained in control, 71-63, at the end of the third, but then the Energy started with a 10-to-nothing run in the last quarter and raced ahead at 73-71. (SB)
