Picked sixth in the recent PBA Draft, little was expected from Alex Nuyles.
But the 6-foot-1 guard from Adamson University has slowly dug his way into coach Yeng Guiao’s rotation with Rain or Shine, and he has not let his fiery mentor down.
Nuyles led Rain or Shine with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in their 98-87 win over GlobalPort, and followed it up with a 13-point, five-rebound, and 6-assist performance in their gut-wrenching 90-88 victory over Talk ‘N Text.
He has been such a positive note for the E-Painters that Guiao himself acknowledged the rookie’s efforts.
“Alex Nuyles is proving himself to be a valuable asset. Even to the point where he is able to contribute in end game situations,” he said.
Nuyles has actually even been inserted in the final minute of their Talk ‘N Text game where he defended no less than Jimmy Alapag in the closing seconds.
“That’s a good sign for us. It makes our team deeper in terms of our rotation,” Guiao added.
But for the rookie, its just doing what he was asked to do.
“Ginagawa ko lang yung trabaho ko,” Nuyles said. “Always every practice, dapat aggressive lang. Attack the basket para ma-open up yung mga shooters namin.”
He said he was not surprise by Guiao’s bold move to insert him in the closing minutes in exchange for gunner Jeff Chan.
“Once na maganda yung game mo sa first to third quarters, sure yun na ipapasok ka sa last minute,” he said.
He also gave back the credit to coach Yeng, saying, “kahit pangit yung laro mo, andun pa rin yung kumpyansa nya. Every time, may chance ka palagi.”
Nuyles has slowly accustomed himself to his role with the E-Painters, as he said it is reminiscent of his role with the Falcons before. This time, however, his efforts do not go for naught.
“Ganun din yung laro namin kaso palaging talo dati. Naiba dito, nananalo na kami,” he said.
“Trabaho namin ‘to kaya dapat every game, magpakita kami ng maganda.” (RL)
