Six straight wins to start the conference and top the league might have given Talk ‘N Text a big head start against its competition.
But for their team captain Jimmy Alapag, he doesn’t want to get blinded by their early success.
“To be honest, 6-0 doesn’t mean anything to us,” he said after their 94-87 win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel last Sunday. “It’s great to get to a good start especially with the format of this conference being so short, but we’re not where we want to be.”
He added, “Our goals are much higher than just 6-0. It’s great to be where we are now, but by no means are we comfortable, and our focus is to get ready against San Mig Coffee next Monday.”
The Mighty Mouse also praised their import Richard Howell, who finished the game with 19 points and 23 boards in the win, as a big reason in Talk ‘N Text’s 6-0 start.
“A lot of it has to do with our import. Rich has been great for us,” Alapag said. “He has to be up there (in the Best Imports this conference). I know a lot of other imports are putting up big numbers, but Rich is a great fit for us and we’re happy that we have him.”
“I think the disappointment from losing last conference might have been a blessing in disguise because it gave us some extra time to really prepare for the conference, the guys got healed up and got to a better condition going into the conference. I think those are making the big difference so far,” he added.
“We’re taking things one game at a time, and we’re trying to build some confidence going to the playoffs. This conference is so short, so it’s important for us to continue to build (our confidence). Also, we have to give credit to coach Norman and the coaching staff in preparing us for this conference.” (RL)
