In a possible Finals preview between the two remaining unbeaten squads, Abel Galliguez took the spotlight and drained the biggest shot of the game.
The pint-sized playmaker got free in the right wing and drained a booming three with one second left to play, helping Cagayan Valley to a huge 80-77 victory over powerhouse Hapee to stay unscathed in the 2015 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
“My teammates trusted me and the shots fell when it counted,” Galliguez said.
Cagayan Valley head coach Alvin Pua, who was late in the game, returned to the sidelines after serving his three-game suspension. But he downplayed the big win, saying, “Maraming nagsasabi na tsamba lang, so tsamba lang.
“Sabi ko lang sa players na wag sila bibigay sa tawagan. Pag pumutok yung fuse nila, sila ang talo,” Pua said. “Niremind ko sila na wag lang marattle kasi nagkakagulo sila sa plays.”
Battling back from an early 16-point deficit, the Rising Suns pulled together and unleashed a 14-0 run to take the lead in the fourth quarter, 77-69.
However, the Fresh Fighters fought back and forced two successive turnovers in the final minute to knot the score at 77 with 10.4 seconds left to play, thanks to a couple of freebies from Troy Rosario.
With Cagayan running out of timeouts, Galliguez took hold of the ball, faked a hand-off and got free, draining the game-winning trey.
Garvo Lanete got open in the final play, but his right corner three could not find the bottom of the net as Hapee tasted its first loss of the tourney.
Fil-Tongan Moala Tautuaa led the Rising Suns with 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
“It feels good. We were down but we fought back,” he said.
Tautuaa also got a chance to square off with Hapee’s Ola Adeogun, giving the Fil-Tongan big man his biggest challenge in his D-League stay.
“Finally, I got to matchup with a guy my size. He got me early, but I got used to it and became more aggressive in the end,” Tautuaa said. “It was good for us to come together as a team.”
Galliguez finished with 16 markers while Don Trollano chimed in 11 points and seven boards.
At 10-0, Cagayan Valley could clinch the top seed with a win on Monday against Wangs Basketball.
The loss drops the famed Fresh Fighters to a 10-1 slate as they stay idle waiting for their opponent in the semifinals.
Bobby Ray Parks carried the fight for Hapee with his 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Rosario got 12 markers and seven rebounds.
Ola Adeogun and Lanete both scored 10 in the defeat.
In the first game, Cebuana Lhuillier closed out their eliminations campaign with a 93-62 rout of MP Hotel.
Norbert Torres dominated the Warriors with his 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals for the Gems, while Almond Vosotros added 13 markers.
Clark Bautista also got 12 points in the mugging, as Allan Mangahas had 10.
An 11-0 run in the second period stretched the lead to 31-17 as Cebuana Lhuillier started to pull away and take an advantage, en route to leads of as big as 31.
Wowie Escosio and Jan Jamon both had 11 for MP Hotel, as the Warriors finished their initial D-League campaign on a nine-game losing streak and exited with a 1-10 record.
In the second game, Jumbo Plastic clinched the final twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals with an 88-80 win over MJM Builders-FEU.
The Giants survived a tough fightback from the M-Builders to escape with their seventh win of the tourney.
“Scary win,” quipped Jumbo Plastic coach Stevenson Tiu. “Pressure ‘to sa amin kasi itong game na ‘to, bini-build up na namin yung confidence ng mga players para ma-carry over sa playoffs against Cebuana.”
Philip Paniamogan unloaded 14 of his 20 points in the second half on a 5-of-13 shooting from threes, alongside his 11 rebounds.
Juami Tiongson added 11 markers, while Joseph Terso and Jan Colina combined for 20.
Tiu expressed his disappointment with his big guys, saying, “Nakukulangan pa ako sa effort. Hopefully, macheck namin yun sa quarterfinals.”
Glenn Khobuntin paced MJM with 21 points and seven rebounds even as Raymar Jose ended up with 10 markers and seven boards.
Gelo Alolino also got 10 points for the M-Builders (3-8)
With both Jumbo Plastic and Cebuana Lhuillier finishing at 7-4, the Giants will get the fourth seed courtesy of their 63-61 win over the Gems. The two would square off once more in the playoffs.
Tiu said that their victory over the Gems brings in no advantage anymore, noting, “Yung panalo namin sa kanila, no bearing na yun. Yung intensity ng game, di na pareho. Quarterfinals na yan eh. We have to work on our defense.”
Meanwhile, with Cebuana Lhuillier going in as the underdog, coach Boycie Zamar wants his boys to stay positive and believe that they can still advance to the semifinals.
“Just the mindset, we need to change that,” he said. “What is important is that we get two wins.”
