PBA Draft Focus: Barangay Ginebra Kings
Picks: (First Round) No. 5; (Second Round) No. 4
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel may have added the missing piece that could bring the starving franchise to the championship, but the Kings’ still have a chance to further improve their roster.
After tabbing the winningest coach in league history in Tim Cone last month, the Kings could get a few solid pieces in the upcoming 2015 Gatorade PBA Rookie Draft.
While Ginebra is loaded from top to bottom, talent and youth from the draft certainly won’t hurt.
Picking fifth overall and fourth in the second round, the Kings could bring in players who Cone believes can fit in nicely with his triangle offense.
San Beda’s Art dela Cruz or Perpetual Help’s Scottie Thompson, versatile players who can play multiple positions and do almost anything, could be that guy for Ginebra. But that is of course if either or (for some reason) both NCAA stars are still available after four picks.
Then it gets tricky in the second round with the 16th overall pick. Cone’s knack for finding the right players to fill in key roles will definitely be an advantage for Ginebra and it will definitely come into play.
Ginebra has also re-signed point guard Josh Urbiztondo just last week but with Mark Caguioa and JayJay Helterbrand nearing the end of their careers, the Kings could also use one of their picks on a guard like Red Lions’ heady playmaker Baser Amer, University of the East’s explosive star Roi Sumang or Ateneo’s Chris Newsome, who’s arguably the best athlete in the class.
