Make no mistake, when Jimmy Alapag takes the court against Talk ‘N Text, Harvey Carey would have no second thoughts about going hard against his best friend.
“We’ve joked about (his return), but once we’re on the court, we’re opponents,” the forward said.
Alapag, which spent his entire playing career with the Texters before taking on the team manager role earlier in the year, came out of retirement and is set to play for Meralco.
And Carey, who had been Alapag’s long time teammate, admits it would be a little awkward at first.
“It will be a little weird playing against Jimmy since we’re teammates for 12 years. The transition he had from player to team manager, it was really a little weird not having him on the court,” he said.
Though a lot of people were caught by surprise with Alapag’s decision to cone out of retirement, Carey knew that his buddy won’t be able to resist the itch to comeback.
“In my heart, I knew he still had that fire. When he was a team manager, he’s still vocal like he was still a player, still our captain. I knew he still had the passion for the game,” he said.
Carey is just happy that Alapag is happy is going to get another shot at playing.
“He’ll do well in Meralco. He’s going to bring another element there, especially in his leadership,” he said. “I wish him the best on Meralco. They’re getting a great player and a great leader.”
“But once we go on the court, if he comes in for a lay-up, I’m going to take him out, for sure.”
