In its first season in pro play, among Mahindra’s modest achievements was a winning 2-1 win-loss record in head-on duels with San Miguel Beer.
And this is one reason why the Beermen won’t take the Enforcers for granted.
Beaten by Mahindra (then known as Kia) in their elims matches in the Commissioner’s Cup and in the Governors Cup, San Miguel seeks redemption as the two teams face off Wednesday night in the Smart Bro PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
A more important goal for the Beermen is to sustain a searing streak to close in on a Top Two finish for an outright Final Four entry.
But then again, the Beermen would have at the back of their mind the twin losses to the Enforcers last season.
“Wala naman talagang teams sa PBA na pwedeng balewalain lang,” said SMB coach Leo Austria ahead of their 7 p.m. duel with the Enforcers.
While the Beermen press their Top Two aspiration, the Enforcers will be out to push their drive for the Magic 10 or a spot in the quarterfinals.
Mahindra has just jumped to ninth place following an 86-83 win over Meralco Friday.
With an earlier win over NLEX, the Enforcers tote a 2-5 win-loss record, ahead of the Star Hotshots at 2-6, the Blackwater Elite at 1-6 and the Bolts at 1-7.
Coach Chito Victolero hopes guys like LA Revilla, Aldrech Ramos, Mark Yee, Karl Dehesa and Kyle Pascual continue to churn out big games to enhance their quarterfinal aspiration.
They have improved on their 1-10 showing in similar tourney last season. But they don’t want to stop there.
Their last four games are San Miguel Beer, Star, Globalport and Blackwater.
Needless to say, the Enforcers face an extremenly tough test versus the Beermen.
June Mar Fajardo and his teammates enjoy tremendous championship form that has earned them wins over Globalport, Meralco, Blackwater, Barangay Ginebra, Barako Bull and Star.
Their lone defeat came at the hands of Rain or Shine, 84-99. (SB)
