Terrence Romeo hasn’t been as effective as he was when he torched Alaska with 41 points in Game 1 largely because Alaska has played him and GlobalPort differently since then.
The Aces, one of the best defensive teams in the league, uncharacteristically let the Batang Pier score 107 points in a 14-point loss last Wednesday, but after making the necessary adjustments, they’ve only allowed an average of 80.6 points in the next three games.
Alaska has also managed to slow Romeo down after his career night and the 23-year-old guard acknowledged the change in the Aces’ defense against him and his teammates.
“May kakaiba,” said Romeo. “Unang-una kong nakita siguro apat na tao yung nilalagay nila sa akin paiba-iba. Hindi lang sakin, pati rin sa ibang teammates ko maganda rin depensa nila.”
Romeo is still putting up numbers within his league-leading 23 points per game average in his last three games, but he hasn’t been as efficient after shooting 57% in Game 1.
The problem for GlobalPort, however, isn’t primarily on the offensive side of things, as per Romeo, who also pointed out that the Batang Pier will have to defend better if they want to extend the series.
“Hindi kami maka-connect sa shots namin tapos yung kabila nahi-hit nila mga tira nila. Kailangan din siguro ma-improve pa namin depensa namin,” he said.
Despite facing a 3-1 deficit, GlobalPort isn’t waving the white flag just yet with Game 5 set on Tuesday night.
“Positive pa rin yung mga coaches namin na kaya namin maka-bounce back,” said Romeo. “Basta positive lang kami na makakabawi kami.”
