LUCENA – Vic Manuel exploded with 11 points after drawing a flagrant foul to the jaw early in the fourth then RJ Jazul had his crucial binge at endgame as Alaska Milk stepped a win away from winning the Smart Bro PBA Philippine Cup crown with an 82-75 drubbing of San Miguel Beer at the Quezon Convention Center here Friday night.
In a repeat of Game Two, the Aces blasted the Beermen in the payoff period to establish an insurmountable three-games-to-nil lead in the best-of-seven title series.
Thus, Alaska has got three cracks at earning the coveted all-Filipino crown, with the Aces shooting for a four-game sweep in Game Four Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
The Aces will be seeking to avenge a similar 4-0 championship series loss to the Beermen in the last Governors Cup.
With a lift from JayR Reyes and the other SMB reserves, the Beermen seized control in the second quarter and set the pace through the next quarter.
The Beermen were still ahead at 60-57 when Reyes committed a flagrant foul penalty two on Manuel causing his outright ejection with 9:32 left to play.
That incident proved to be the game changer.
Reyes went 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 4-of-5 overall from the field as he matched his season-best of 10 points just in the second quarter.
Curiously, through the post-elims play, the 6-foot-7 third-string SMB center had made only two points. He was kept on the bench in Game One and played 7:18minutes in Game Two, going 0-of-2 from the field.
Ryan Arana, Chris Lutz and Bryan Heruela put in their share as the Beermen made a decisive attack in the second period to seize a 41-31 advantage at the turn.
The Beermen worked on a huge 21-point turnaround in the opening half, wiping out an early 11-point deficit at 5-16 then surging all the way to that 10-point halftime lead.
SMB caught up at 24-all then moved ahead at 27-24 on back-to-back baskets by Arana – first on a spinning drive then on a three-pointer off a kickoff by Heruela.
After falling behind by 10, the Aces also waged a chase, coming to within three at 55-58 at the end of the third period.
A free throw then a short stab by Vic Manuel tied the count at 60 at the onset of the final canto. And the two teams fought tooth and nail to the finish.
SMB head coach Leo Austria and Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas, proud sons of the host province, welcomed the crowd to the game before tip-off.
