The PBA Board of Governors tackles important matters regarding the national team as it convenes in a meeting at the league’s office in Libis, Quezon City Thursday noon.
How would they go about lending players to the national team, the schedule of practices and the need to revise their third conference format and schedule are the key concerns.
“These are burning issues to be discussed,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.
“Without preempting the Board, there’s the probability of taking a look at possibly shortening the Governors’ Cup format. I may be asked to make a study and I will take a look at it,” Salud also said.
The possibility of tweaking the third conference format and schedule arose when FIBA Asia scheduled the 2013 Asian joust on Aug. 1-11.
Under the approved PBA season schedule, the season-ending Governors’ Cup may last up to July 28.
“For a brief background, we’d already compressed our schedule as we were told earlier that FIBA Asia will start last week of August or the first week of September,” said Salud.
Nonetheless, PBA officials pronounced readiness to make moves that would help the country achieve its goals in the Asian meet, a big event happening on home soil for the first time in 40 years.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is determined to make its hosting a resounding success and, at the same time, is hoping that Gilas Pilipinas makes the grade for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Sixteen teams will compete in the 11-day event with the top three gaining tickets to the world meet in Spain. The Philippines narrowly missed a podium finish the last time in Wuhan, China.
PBA Board chair Robert Non has earlier said the league is ready to take a look at best alternatives to make it viable for the PBA and the FIBA Asia event to co-exist.
Lending of players to the nationals team seems to be a lesser concern now since teams have already committed to release a player each to Gilas Pilipinas. (SB)
