EYES ON PLAYOFFS AS BATANG PIER TAKE ON STRUGGLING GIN KINGS

Through eight conferences in the pro league, GlobalPort has never scored more than five wins in a tourney.

In the current PBA Governors’ Cup, the Mikee Romero-owned franchise has nailed four “W’s” just in six games.

The Batang Pier seek to sustain the momentum of their swashbuckling ride and improve their stock in the upper half of the leaderboard when they go up against the struggling Barangay Ginebra Kings at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Coach Pido Jarencio and his troops virtually book a berth in the playoffs if they score a follow-up on their 123-120 win over the Talk n Text Tropang Texters last Friday.

GlobalPort is right behind the league frontrunners at 4-2 while Ginebra has a lot of catching up to do at 2-4.

The Gin Kings’ slide continued Sunday even on the return of Greg Slaughter versus San Miguel Beer. June Mar Fajardo showed up Slaughter and the Beermen topped the Kings, 100-85.

Against GlobalPort, Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar have to contain mammoth import Jarrid Famous.

On Sunday, Ginebra coach Frankie Lim benched Mongolian recruit Sanchir Tungalag for the second straight game. Tungalag has been given the pink slip, giving way to Korean guard Jiwan Kim.

But the Kings may have to deal with a lot of other things if they’re to survive the eliminations and battle deep in the post-elims play.

Ginebra has Purefoods, Meralco, Barako Bull and NLEX as its last four assignments in the elims.

GlobalPort, meanwhile, looks a cinch to make the playoffs and may even make the Top Four that rewards a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

“Of course, lahat naman Top Four ang target. Mahirap kalaban ang team na may twice-to-beat advantage,” said Jarencio.

Stanley Pringle sizzled with five treys and a total of 23 points in his return from a two-game layoff, providing tremendous boost as GlobalPort beat out Talk n Text in a shootout.

Famous also had a king-sized job in his second game as a GlobalPort import, collecting 27 points and 18 rebounds.

Terrence Romeo was another GlobalPort player who put in a 20-point game, Omar Krayem and Doug Kramer contributed double-digit outputs while Keith Jensen delivered two lethal treys at the finish as the Batang Pier soothed their hearts after back-to-back losses to the Beermen and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

“Total team effort,” said Jarencio, in mourning with the recent passing of his older brother Giovanni.

The Batang Pier did pull a big game together. Just consider their balanced effort leading to their largest output in a game since their 114-100 win over Air21 two years ago. (SB)
