GlobalPort has had enough of just simply making it to the quarterfinals.
Eyeing to go deep in the playoffs, the Batang Pier are primed to make that leap this conference.
“I hope we break into the semifinals,” said head coach Pido Jarencio.
Behind Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle, GlobalPort has matched its best eliminations record at 7-4, and has snagged one of the twice-to-beat advantages in the 2016 Smart Bro PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
“The team has a goal this conference and let’s see if we have positive results,” Jarencio said.
Standing in the Batang Pier’s way is Barako Bull, which has been this season’s surprise team.
Drawing huge contributions from Willie Wilson, Josh Urbiztondo, and JC Intal, the Energy have made the most from their ragtag crew under the strady guidance of Koy Banal.
Barako Bull will have to make do without a key cog in RR Garcia, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury.
The Energy, though, remainsdefiant and ready to pull a upset whenever the opportunity presents itself.
“We will try to be ready, try to give them a good fight, try to stay as close as we can,” said coach Koy Banal. “We will try to salvage an upset.”
The two teams fought hard back on November 8, with GlobalPort slightly edging Barako Bull, 105-91, in overtime.
The Batang Pier squandered a 15-point lead to a feisty Energy squad, before pulling away in the extra period thanks to Romeo’s hot shooting.
