Ginebra out to bolster playoff bid, takes on Star

PBA-Images-313

Barangay Ginebra, back on the winning track after a 101-87 spanking of Rain or Shine the last time out, seeks to go on a run again as it squares off with the back-to-the-wall Star squad in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday.

The Gin Kings and the Hotshots clash in their keenly awaited match at 6:45 p.m. with the former out to nail a win that will assure them of an outright playoff entry.

Already in the fringes of the playoffs, the Gin Kings hope to finish strong in the elims to land a spot in the Top Four for a twice to beat in the quarterfinals.

In their last game against the E-Painters, Ginebra coach Tim Cone said his troops showed indications they’re ready to contend for the crucial advantage in the quarters.

The Kings now share third place with the San Miguel Beermen at 5-2 as the Mahindra Enforcers gained solo second place at 6-2 following a 107-104 stoppage of the erstwhile unbeaten TNT KaTropa Texters Friday.

The Hotshots are way behind at 1-5, struggling badly under rookie coach Jason Webb and import sub Joel Wright.

Their lone win came in an overtime tiff with Globalport. Their losses were again Mahindra, Blackwater, San Miguel Beer, NLEX and Alaska Milk. They dropped their last two with Wright in tow.

The Hotshots hope to end their bleeding before it gets too late. As it is, they have a lot of catching up to do in their five remaining games against Ginebra, Phoenix Petroleum, Meralco, TNT KaTropa and Rain or Shine.

The question is how to match up with the fired-up, in-form Ginebra team.

Justin Brownlee, Japeth Aguilar, LA Tenorio and Sol Mercado have all been consistently churning out solid games.

Meanwhile, the whole Star team is wobbling.
