GlobalPort, Ginebra clash

GlobalPort and Barangay Ginebra clash in a game Sunday that will bring back to mind the Batang Pier’s big breakthrough in the local pro league last year.

The Batang Pier stunned the Gin Kings, 84-83, in Phase 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals last year as Globalport earned a first-ever semifinals entry.

The loss, meanwhile, stopped the Gin Kings’ ride in their first tournament under two-time grandslam-winning coach Tim Cone.

After that eventful match-up, the Batang Pier and the Gin Kings face off again in an all-Filipino tourney at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

GlobalPort seeks to regain a piece of the lead with Rain or Shine at 3-1 (win-loss) while Ginebra chases a second straight win after a losing season debut against TNT KaTropa.

The Gin Kings, the Governors Cup champs, broke into the win-column in the Philippine Cup with an 81-74 stoppage of a previously unbeaten ROS side.

The Batang Pier, meanwhile, are smarting from a loss to the Alaska Milk Aces that halted their 2-0 season start.

Cone is hoping they will be able to build on their victory over the E-Painters.

“We have a tough schedule and it’s so hard to get into a rhythm,” said Cone whose chargers are to play a third straight Sunday match with no game in between.

The Kings barely squeezed through versus the E-Painters.

“We talked about how to grind out a win. Against TNT, we didn’t play with a lot of humility. When we do that, we don’t play to our identity,” Cone said.

The Batang Pier, on the other hand, suffered a first loss in the tourney when they succumbed on Alaska’s pressing defense in the fourth quarter of their match Wednesday.

GlobalPort dominated in the first three quarters with Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle, as usual, leading the way for the team.

Romeo led all scorers with 26 points while Pringle added 23 but they themselves were contained by the Aces at winning time.

The Aces were still trailing by eight at 67-75 before Abueva rattled in 10 straight points to touch off a key 20-4 exchange that turned the tide in their favor.

The Batang Pier failed to recover.
