Stanley Pringle sizzled with five treys and a total of 23 points in his return from a two-game layoff, providing tremendous boost as GlobalPort beat out Talk n Text, 123-120, in a PBA Governors’ Cup shootout at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Friday night.
Jarrid Famous also had a king-sized job in his second game as a GlobalPort import, collecting 27 points and 18 rebounds to help the Batang Pier squeak past the Texters and into a share of fourth place with the San Miguel Beermen at 4-2.
Terrence Romeo was another GlobalPort player who put in a 20-point game, Omar Krayem and Doug Kramer contributed double-digit outputs while Keith Jensen delivered two lethal treys at the finish as the Batang Pier soothed their hearts after back-to-back losses to the Beermen and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
“Total team effort,” said GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio, in mourning with the passing of his older brother Giovanni Monday due to heart attack.
The Batang Pier did pull a big game together. Just consider their balanced effort leading to their largest output in a game since their 114-100 win over Air21 two years ago.
Ronjay Buenafe chipped in nine points, including a triple that made him the 30th member of an elite group of players who’ve piled up at least 500 three-pointers.
The Batang Pier opened an eight-point lead, 99-91, at the close of the third period and banked on the exploits of Jensen and Pringle towards the end to score a second win in their last three matchups with the Texters.
They did that after going 0-7 versus TNT in the franchise’s first two seasons in the pro league.
The Texters could have forced overtime but Jayson Castro missed two three-point attempts in the closing seconds.
As Castro’s last shot went air ball at the buzzer, the Batang Pier eventually snapped a two-game losing skein and at the same time halted the Texters’ two-game romp.
Steffphon Pettigrew and Castro fired 35 and 34 points, respectively, to lead the Texters’ stand in the well-fought high-scoring game.
Sam Daghles and Ranidel de Ocampo were also productive with 19 and 10, respectively.
The Texters, however, lacked the push at endgame and thus went down to sixth place at 3-2.
The shootout saw the Batang Pier drain 13 three-pointers as against the Texters’ 11.
Pringle, Romeo and Jensen had three each for GlobalPort while Daghles and Castro rifled in four apiece for TNT. (SB)
