Japeth Aguilar soared for a giant play in the closing seconds to cap a sterling double-double game and lift Barangay Ginebra San Miguel past GlobalPort, 111-108, in a tough overtime battle in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday.
Aguilar blocked a shot by Keith Jensen, grabbed the loose ball himself and then buried two important charities in the last 5.9 seconds as the Kings overcame the dangerous GlobalPort side and moved up to solo eighth with a 3-4 win-loss card.
Greg Slaughter and Mark Caguioa also made clutch plays in the extension period as Ginebra survived Jarrid Famous’ mammoth double-double game and the torrid shooting of the amazing GlobalPort guards.
The Batang Pier went down fighting to the final second, absorbing a third loss against four wins.
“Big win. Kasi kung natalo pa uli kami, baka lulubog na kami ng tuluyan,” said Ginebra coach Frankie Lim.
“It boiled down to effort. Before the game, we talked about that. Sabi ko hindi pwedeng lalamya-lamya kami at kakainin kami ng buo ng GlobalPort,” Lim also said. “Ang bigat ng GlobalPort. Ang hirap talunin. They’re a strong team with a good import and very talented guards.”
Aguilar, Caguioa and Slaughter all struggled with their shooting but came through in overtime, negating Famous’ PBA highs of 39 points and 28 rebounds.
Also going down the drain were the efforts of Omar Krayem (four triples and a total of 19 points), Terrence Romeo (18 markers) and Stanley Pringle (13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals).
The Batang Pier won’t go away but the Kings won’t be denied with Slaughter, Caguioa and Aguilar combining for eight huge points in OT.
Caguioa missed his first six field goal attempts but scored on an attack off Pringle, pushing Ginebra up, 109-108, in the last 12.3 seconds.
Aguilar preserved their effort as he foiled Jensen’s outside shot in the ensuing play.
Krayem went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, sending the game into overtime in draining his third triple with 4.5 ticks left in regulations.
The two teams fought through 14 lead changes and 11 deadlocks with Orlando Johnson piling up 34 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for Ginebra.
New Asian import Kim Jiwan contributed 11 markers for the Kings.
“Malaking bagay din si Kim. Additional weapon namin siya,” said Lim of the Korean gunner taking over the spot of Mongolian Sanchir Tungalag. (SB)
