Globalport weathered a fourth-quarter storm by an all-Filipino Tropang TNT side and roared to a second straight win with a 108-101 drubbing of the Texters in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the MOA Arena in Pasay City last night.
The Batang Pier brought back old import Calvin Warner but it was Terrence Romeo who played like a reinforcement, leading the team to a second win in a row following an 89-85 spanking of the Barangay Ginebra Kings Sunday.
Romeo sparkled with 33 points, including four three-pointers, as Globalport improved to 2-1 in a tie with Blackwater.
Warner made only 11 points but grabbed 21 rebounds in a triumphant return with the team he played four games with in the same conference last season. The Batang Pier went 2-2 (win-loss) with Warner then.
“I have to salute Warner. Nagtrabaho ng husto kahit na galing sa 30-hour flight from Dominican Republic at 8 a.m. (Friday) dumating,” said Globalport coach Pido Jarencio.
“Nagkaamuyan agad yung import at mga locals. The locals did their share,” Jarencio also said.
Romeo figured in a fierce shootout with Jayson Castro at the finish. In a virtual eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation, the young Globalport hotshots didn’t blink and bail the Batang Pier out of trouble.
Castro carried the bulk of the fight for TNT as the team was still in search of an import sub to Ivan Johnson.
The Batang Pier got into great groove in the second quarter, pounding the Texters, 36-25, to lead by 12 at 55-43 at the half.
They then pressed their bid in the third, stretching their lead to 21, 81-60, before closing the quarter at 90-71.
Romeo, Stanley Pringle, Roi Sumang and Keith Jensen combined for 6-of-9 three-point shooting to highlight their second-quarter tear.
