Commissioner’s Cup titlist Rain or Shine checked its skid and stayed in equal footing with Phoenix Petroleum at sixth place as it whipped the injury-hit Mahindra squad, 103-88, in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Friday night.
The E-Painters squandered an early 18-point lead but got into a good rhythm again in the fourth quarter and clobbered the Enforcers to regain a .500 mark at 4-4.
Jason Forte, who flew in Thursday, played break-in minutes and somehow helped the E-Painters notch a second win in their last five outings.
The Rain or Shine locals made the killing as they stopped the Enforcers’ surge, dealing them a third defeat in nine outings sans their top gun KG Canaleta.
Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, Jericho Cruz, Paul Lee and Jeff Chan all put in double-digit outputs while Forte chipped in 10 markers and six rebounds in 16:57 minutes of action.
“We had to do most of the work all-Filipino as Jason Forte had only one practice with us. He came in early morning yesterday and practiced with us at 10 a.m. Obviously, we can’t expect too much from him,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
“We’ll have the same problem Sunday (versus NLEX). Jason will be able to practice with us just once for that game. So we’ll have to do it all-Filipino again. Kung ano ang i-contribute nya eh bonus sa amin,” Guiao added.
A good break for the E-Painters was the sidelining of Canaleta due to an appendectomy that he’d gone through Thursday. Canaleta had been Mahindra’s lead local force in the tourney, averaging 12.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.
Minus Canaleta, the Enforcers put up a tough stand but couldn’t keep up with the E-Painters to the finish.
Almazan, Cruz, Belga and Chan led the way for the E-Painters as they pounded the Enforcers, 35-25, in the payoff period.
Both teams had their swashbuckling runs early on fueled by a torrid shooting as the E-Painters took a two-point lead, 46-44, at the half.
The E-Painters pulled away at 39-21 on a massive attack but the Enforcers were quick to get back into the fight on a fightback spearheaded by Aldrech Ramos and LA Revilla.
Both teams went 5-of-14 from beyond the arc in the first two quarters. Ramos and Revilla had two each for Mahindra.
