Elasto Painters rally to beat Road Warriors

_MG_5568

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters played with the toughness and determination developed under coach Yeng Guiao, showing up their former mentor in repulsing the NLEX Road Warriors, 107-97, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig Friday night.

Though struggling badly through the first 40 minutes, the E-Painters hung in there before hitting a good rhythm in the homestretch as they turned back the Road Warriors to gain a piece of second place with the
Blackwater Elite and the TNT KaTropa Texters at 4-2.

The Road Warriors, meanwhile, lost their touch and failed to make the stops at the finish, thus, crashing down to a fifth straight loss after a triumphant season debut.

Jewel Ponferada came through with a 22-point job in the absence of the injury-hit Raymond Almazan while James Yap, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood and Jericho Cruz hit big shots in the closing minutes as the E-Painters bounced back from a 91-99 loss to the Star Hotshots the last time out.

At the buzzer, Guiao approached his former team and offered his hand to coach Caloy Garcia and to almost all the members of the ROS team.

Indeed, the E-Painters did a good job, showing great resolve in a fightback from a 12-point deficit.
“In-expect namin it would be a hard game. It was an ugly win for us, ang daming lapses in the first half,” said Garcia.

“Actually, nung halftime nagalit ako. They’re (the Road Warriors) playing like the ROS team. Sabi ko ‘takot kayo, ayaw nyong gumalaw,'” Garcia also said.

The E-Painters stepped up in the payoff period, pummeling the Road Warriors, 27-12.

Going to naught were the big games of NLEX players Sean Anthony (22 points and 16 rebounds), Jansen Rios (20 points) and Kevin Alas (17 markers).
