It took only two games for Denzel Bowles to get himself back in the groove of things.
After a forgettable game in his first PBA game since his return against Rain or Shine Friday night, the reigning Best Import of the Commissioner’s Cup vowed to play much better and he did just that Sunday against the Talk N Text Tropang Texters, the team which his team, B-Meg Llamados, defeated in the Finals of the same tournament last season.
Bowles announced he indeed is back, coming up with a solid game, finishing with 29 points and 23 rebounds to make up for his sub-par, 12-point performance Friday night and help the San Mig Coffee Mixers to enter the win column after losing their first three games.
Is Monster Bowles definitely back?
“Yeah,” Bowles said. “Fans can expect the same intensity from my game, grabbing every rebound, picking up my spots and helping my team to win every game.”
Bowles had 14 points in the pivotal fourth quarter, including his familiar jab step before releasing a jumper. He was able to impose his will inside as well, giving his counterparts a neat lesson in playing at the post.
For Bowles, facing Talk N Text gave him an added motivation.
“It’s still fresh in my mind,” said Bowles, referring to last season’s Game 7 when he sent the game into overtime after making two pressure-packed charities with no time left. “I had a memorable experience playing against Talk N Text and the most special part is, we won the championship.”
Bowles is still slowly getting himself back in shape after being sidelined for several months due to a knee injury.
“His last game was October last year. He had to be sent back to the United States to recuperate from his injury, but his Chinese team didn’t release and used him as possible back up import. So we waited for February 20 for his release,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone.
“Denzel hasn’t played competitive basketball since October last year. Aside from the two tune up games he had in China and the three practice sessions he had with us prior to his comeback game, he is still trying to get the feel of the game.”
But Cone isn’t giving up on his import and expects him to be better in the coming games.
“Denzel is going to get himself in shape. He is too skilled not to be a great player,” said Cone. “He showed up tonight and he will show up the rest of the conference.” (RJ)
