Air21 nearly tripled Globalport’s third quarter output en route to a 29-point turnaround and an ensuing 87-72 win in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum that gave the Express solo fifth spot in the team standings.

Wynne Arboleda had nine points in that pivotal third canto where Air21 outscored the Batang Pier 28-10 that paved the way for the franchise’s fourth straight win, its longest since entering the league last season as Shopinas.com.

“It’s nice to make it four in a row,” said Air21 head coach Franz Pumaren, whose team barged into the upper half of the standings for the first time in the conference with their 5-5 slate.

The Express, who battled back from deficits of as much as 14 points in the second quarter, had five players scoring in double figures led by the 22 of Michael Dunigan, the conference’s leading scorer, who added 15 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

KG Canaleta and Mike Cortez added 14 points apiece and Arboleda finished with 12 while combining for 10 of Air21’s 12 triples in the game.

The Batang Pier, who also lost to the Express 106-94 in their first meeting last March 10, succumbed to their seventh straight defeat and fell deeper down the cellar with their 2-8 slate despite getting 23 points, 12 rebounds, four shotblocks, two steals and one assist from new import Sylvester Morgan.

“We just got lucky we played Gobalport with a new import again. They probably didn’t have much time to prepare with him plus also the jet lag factor,” added Pumaren of Morgan, who replaced Walter Sharpe.

Willie Miller and Japeth Aguilar added 16 and 11 points respectively for Globalport but Gary David was held to below double figures for the first time in the conference, finishing with only nine markers on a 4-for-10 shooting from the floor.

Aguilar had 10 points in the first half, joining forces with Miller to give the Batang Pier leads of as much as 29-15 in the second period.

But with Arboleda at the helm, Air21 nearly matched their first half output in the third canto while limiting Globalport to just two field goals to get back in the game en route to leads of as much as 21 in the fourth quarter. (FM)
