At the end of the eventful bill at the Mall of Asia Arena Saturday, Air21 has grabbed the last ticket to the quarters, Rain or Shine got a free ride into the Top Two and San Mig Coffee landed into the Magic Six.
The Mixers, though still having health woes, took the best the Meralco Bolts could offer, hacking out a crucial 97-90 victory that assured San Mig Coffee a tie for third place at the close of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup elimination round Wednesday.
Only two teams, at the most, can catch up with San Mig Coffee at 8-6, meaning the Mixers are assured of a spot in the best-of-three quarterfinals, avoiding a Final Eight matchup with a team with a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Bolts moved down to 6-7, in danger of ending up at seventh place.
“We’re proud of our guys. Ping (Marc Pingris) couldn’t play tonight, James (Yap) played hurt but hit a couple of baskets. PJ (Simon) got his tooth knocked out. It’s hard not to appreciate the character of our team,” said San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone after their key win.
“Mark (Barroca) stepped up, Alex (Mallari) stepped up defensively, Joe (Devance) had an outstanding game making the right plays then there’s Denzel (Bowles),” Cone also said, mentioning the Mixers that made big impact versus the Bolts.
Bowles topscored with 27 points while Barroca, Devance and Simon added at least 17 each as the Mixers repeated their 76-71 win over the Bolts in their previous tiff.
Barroca stood tallest with a remarkable all-around performance also marked by 10 assists, five rebounds and three steals.
“Alam namin na kailangan ng bawat isa sa amin ng extra effort. Ako talagang pinagbutihan ko ang leadership sa game,” said Barroca.
He drained two huge baskets and set up Bowles for a thunderous jam as San Mig Coffee all but settled the outcome of the game at 97-86.
The Mixers got past the Air21 Express and the Bolts in four nights – a strong finish in the elims that should augur well for San Mig’s performance in the quarters.
“We wanted badly to win this game for a morale boost and momentum going into the playoffs. Sana magtuloy-tuloy,” said Barroca. (SB)
