DAVAO CITY – Swinging by Davao from a family trip in Boracay, Globalport team owner Mikee Romero churned out a huge double-double performance to lead the PBA Board of Governors to an emphatic 85-62 win over the PBA Press Corps in another side event of the PBA All-Star Week here Saturday night at the USEP Gym.

Romero, a businessman-sportsman who’s into basketball, polo and shooting, piled up 31 points and 16 rebounds for the PBA officials who made it 2-of-2 in their friendly All-Star matchup with the PBA scribes.

Romero, a former La Salle Green Archer, was named Most Valuable Player.

Alaska’s Dickie Bachmann and technical head Ramil Cruz imposed their huge presence as they collared 23 and 15 rebounds, respectively, while Globalport’s Erick Arejola contributed 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists for Team PBA which duplicated its narrow win over Sports Media in Puerto Princesa in 2010.

FEATURED STORIES

PBA artist/photographer Nuki Sabio and the Philippine Star’s Nelson Beltran paced the losing team with 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Commissioner Chito Salud, San Mig Coffee governor Rene Pardo and PBA staff member Richard Cabarles put in essential help for the winning team which established momentum in the second quarter and staved off repeated rallies by the Mediamen.

Romero, Arejola, Bachmann and Virgil Villavicencio, all former La Salle players, teamed up in a key assault giving their team a 48-31 spread at the half.

Abante’s Zaldy Perez hit back-to-back baskets, Manila Bulletin’s Waylon Galvez sneaked in a shot off Bachmann and PM’s Fidel Mangonon canned in two charities as the Scribes mounted a rally in the second period.

Team PBA, however, kept a double-digit spread at the end of the quarter and went to board chairman Robert Non, vice chairman Mon Segismundo and Talk n Text’s Pato Gregorio to finish off the Scribes.

Cruz nailed two foul shots with no time left as Team PBA barely beat Sports Media in Puerto Princesa.

Swashbuckling debuts by Romero, Bachmann, Arejola and Salud made it easy for the PBA officials to make it two in a row over the Scribes.

The scores:

PBA board 85 – Romero 31, Arejola 10, Salud 9, Bachmann 8, Pardo 8, Cabarles 7, Gregorio 5, Villavicencio 3, Cruz 2, Non 2, Segismundo 0.

PBA Press Corps 62 – Sabio 19, Beltran 16, Orellana 7, Joble 6, Mangonon 4, Perez 4, Cortez 2, Galvez 2, Dy 2, Coros 0.
