The Philippines has got the game to be competitive in Asia.
Somehow, Gilas Pilipinas and a PBA select team showed this in completing a two-game sweep for the hosts in the Philippine-China Friendship Games.
FIBA Asia veteran Arwind Santos, co-MVP winner in the PBA All-Star Game in Digos, Davao del Sur, last Sunday, led the PBA squad making it two-of-two for the Filipinos versus the Shanghai Sharks with a come-from-behind 80-71 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Tuesday night.
The night before, Gilas Pilipinas, a combination of PBA stars and amateur standouts plus naturalized player Marcus Douthit, spanked the Chinese, 80-72.
“As I’ve said before kung commercial team against commercial team, laban tayo kahit China, Korea at kahit sino,” said national coach Chot Reyes.
“Mahirap lang pag national team na kasi mas malalim ang pool nila at matagal silang nagsasama-sama. Tayo laging patse-patse lang,” he added.
Against the Sharks, the PBA selection proved it can compete and win even without the benefit of a single practice.
Pouring everything they’ve got at the finish, Santos and company overcame an eight-point deficit early in the fourth and won with plenty to spare.
“Nandyan talaga ang talent natin. We’ve got a bench for the national team. Maraming pagpipilian for the national team. Ang problema, we can only accommodate 12 players,” said Reyes.
“We can form two national teams. Wala pa nga ngayon dito yung mga players natin playing in the (PBA Commissioner’s Cup) semifinals,” Reyes also said.
The PBA select team used hustle, quickness and outside shooting to make up for its size disadvantage.
The PBA stars pumped in 10 of 27 three-pointers with the last, by KG Canaleta, breaking the 71-all standoff with 1:36 left to play.
Yuan Zhang misfired his own three-point attempt in the next play then Beau Belga put back a missed jumper by Mike Cortez as the PBA squad clinched the game at 76-71 with 48 ticks to go.
Canaleta, Santos, Belga and Paul Lee worked on an amazing 17-2 closing run in all as they duplicated Smart Gilas’ win Monday.
Belga came through with team-highs of 16 points and nine rebounds, Santos got away with 15 markers and five boards while Lee, Canaleta and Doug Kramer combined for 26 points.
JayR Reyes and Belga alternated at taking on 7-foot-3 Shanghai center Zhaoxu Zhang. With Kramer and Santos providing double, the PBA squad limited Zhang to 23 points in 32 minutes of action. (SB)
