With two of its import prospects opting to play in the NBA Summer League, Barako Bull Energy decided to bring in Mike Singletary, who played for the squad during an invitational tournament in Dubai two months ago.

Coaching consultant Rajko Toroman told pba.ph that the 6-foot-5 Singletary will be joining the squad next week.

“He is athletic, a good rebounder, with a good attitude. He can play the 3 and 4 positions and is also a good shooter,” said Toroman on Singletary.

Singletary previously played in the NBA D-League, averaging 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds while suiting up for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Known as a big-time scorer in college, Singletary set a Big 12 scoring record when he posted 43 points while leading Texas Tech to an 88-83 win over Texas A & M in 2009.

Jay Llanos Dee, the assistant team manager, said Singletary will arrive on July 10.

Singletary was chosen over two other candidates – Othyus Jeffers and Rodney Carney, two NBA veterans who are trying their luck in the NBA Summer League.

Barako Bull started practicing two weeks ago and had its first tune up – against Gilas Pilipinas on Saturday where the undermanned team got a whipping, 67-84.

Two players are on the injured list  – Alein Maliksi, sidelined with a swollen knee, and Eman Monfort, who hurt his ankle – but Toroman expects a lot of upside from their present batch of players.

“We’ve become younger, faster following the acquisition of Ronjay Buenafe, Keith Jensen and Elmer Espiritu. I expect our team to play better in the coming conference,” added Toroman. (RJ)
