With a 107-113 setback to Barangay Ginebra last Friday, GlobalPort fell deeper into the Commissioner’s Cup cellar at 0-5.
But despite the early losses, coach Pido Jarencio would rather focus on the positives for the young Batang Pier squad, saying that he is finally seeing the team he wanted to build when he took the helm for the Mikee Romero-owned team.
“Nakita na namin na yun yung laro namin. Dapat lang maging consistent kami,” the outspoken coach said. “May mga little things lang na nagkulang kami dun sa game na yun. Medyo di kami naging smart nung dulo, at the same time na-outrebound kami at nakakuha sila sa second chance points. Yun yung maliliit na bagay eh.”
“Pero yung overall picture, nakita ko na na meron, nakita ko na yung takbo. May ibubuga itong team na to,” he said.
Though his mission when he took the job was to “fix” the team, Jarencio still said that the five losses still took a hit on the team’s morale, but he emphasized to the players that they should focus more on the positives they got after their game versus Ginebra.
“Disappointing din. Dumarating yung frustration sa team, pero ang sabi ko sa kanila, heads up lang tayo dahil andyan na tayo. Regarding sa conference, achievable pa rin naman eh. Manalo kami ng apat, di natin masasabi. Sabi ko sa kanila, four games to go, kailangan manalo na tayo,” said Jarencio. “Pero ang sa akin lang, we’re building a system, inaayos natin. Pag naayos yan, eventually gaganda na ang takbo namin. Wag lang bibitaw yung players.”
“Sabi nga ni Evan Brock kanina, ‘Let’s not be down cause were 0-5. Let’s be consistent from now on’. Yung pagtatrabaho, yung sipag, wag dapat mawawala yun, dapat tuloy-tuloy pa rin,” he said.
Jarencio added, “Sabi ko nga sa kanila, kung dun sa last four games namin, ganito yung laro namin, baka marami pa kaming tinalo. Let’s be consistent sa kung ano mang ginawa natin ngayon. May mga konting lapses pa rin, pero yung mga little things na di namin ginawa, yun yung pagi-improve-an namin. Lessons learned sa mga kailangang ayusin namin in-game, at syempre yung player development na mas kailangang ayusin. Pag naayos yan at maging consistent kami, magiging ok na tayo.”
When asked about the identity of the team after five games at the helm for GlobalPort, the Fireman said it’s all coming together now for them.
He said, “Wala pa yung identity, pero parating na. Kasi kung katulad nung kanina ang laro namin, ibig sabihin, lumalaban na. Palaban na. Konting puso pa para umabot sa dulo. Kulang pa pero malapit na magkaroon ng identity itong team na to.” (RL)
