It was a busy afternoon in the PBA Office Tuesday. Commissioner Chito Salud met with a couple of players, a coach, received calls and huddled with his trusted lieutenants before motoring to the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Before the day was through, two big men have switched teams.
Journeyman Yousef Taha was shipped by San Miguel Beer to GlobalPort in exchange for rookie Justin Chua. At 6-8, Taha gives the Batang Pier much needed added ceiling to contend with th imposing frontlines of the opposition. With June Mar Fajardo around, the Beermen didn’t have much use for Taha. But Chua should give SMB more quality minutes off the bench. The 6-5 neophyte moves well, has a nice touch and has shown everyone he deserves minutes on the floor.
Wednesday morning, the Commissioner’s Office announced it has meted out penalties, too.
Meralco workhorse Cliff Hodge was found to have swung his right elbow and hit the face of Rain or Shine hitman Jeff Chan in the fourth quarter of their game last Saturday. That unsportsmanlike act was found to be unnecessary and excessive and was therefore upgraded to a Flagrant Foul Penalty 2.
Hodge was fined P20,000 for the infraction.
And just days after being fined P100,000 for uttering a derogatory word directed at Hodge, Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao was again slapped a P30,000 fine, this time for striking the abdominal area of Talk n Text import Richard Howell as he passed by the Elasto Painters’ bench. It was found that the physical contact could have been avoided and the act was classified as unsportsmanlike in nature. (JL)
