With a chance to sweep its semifinal rival Friday, will it be lucky 13 for Talk ‘N Text?
Going undefeated in their first 12 games spanning the eliminations to the playoffs, the Tropang Texters have had every answer for any gameplan the opposing teams have come up in the 2014 PLDT Home TVolution PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
It was evidenced by the Texters’ 94-87 Game 2 win last Wednesday where Richard Howell fouled out of the game, but a balanced attack led by Ranidel de Ocampo, Jayson Castro, Kelly Williams, and Jimmy Alapag hauled Talk ‘N Text to a commanding 2-0 series lead.
And when the buzzer sounds at the Smart Araneta Coliseum at 8 p.m. on Friday, expect nothing less from Talk ‘N Text as it tries to close out its best-of-five series against Rain or Shine.
Coach Norman Black and the rest of the Tropa are hell-bent to once again make a return trip to the Finals for the first time since last season’s Philippine Cup.
He said, “We’re one win away from playing in the championship and that is our focus. We’ll try to finish this on Friday and advance to the next round.”
Black said that the 12-game winning run is the least of their concerns.
“To be honest, we haven’t even talked about the streak. We never discussed it. I don’t think we’re concerned about it right now particularly with the goal in hand, and that is to go to the championship. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now. We’re just taking it one game at a time,” Black said.
“As far as pressure is concerned, there’s always pressure whether it may be a winning streak or a losing streak. Coaching in the PBA is a pressure job. It’s a part of it so you just have to deal with it and move on.”
The winds might just be going the way of the Tropang Texters as Rain or Shine will miss the services of shooter Chris Tiu, forward Jervy Cruz, and import Wayne Chism, all suffering from different injuries.
But despite the opposition playing hurt, Black still lauded the efforts of the locals who picked up the slack in their teammates’ absences.
“It’s not always that easy playing a team which is All-Filipino especially if they’re still fighting and if they still have a lot of heart,” he said.
On the other side, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said that despite the injuries in his squad, the E-Painters will still go all out come Game 3.
“Upbeat pa rin kami. Walang bibitaw sa amin,” said the fiery coach.
Though his import Chism vowed to play in the pivotal game despite nursing an injured knee, Guiao said that no one of the three would play come Friday.
