Days before the 2014 Gatorade PBA Rookie Draft, Alaska coach Alex Compton said the Aces still have to come up with a plan or strategy.
“It’s hard because you’re kind of at the mercy of the first four teams. I think the only thing known on the Draft is (Stanley) Pringle going at one. After that, it’s a guessing game,” the American mentor said.
Alaska is selecting fifth in the first round, and they also own the first and fourth picks in the second round.
Compton added, “As close as the people are in the PBA, teams don’t want to just say who they are picking and give it away to the other teams. We’re looking at a lot of guys and we know Pringle is out. We have about seven guys who we are reviewing at five.”
Though Alaska is loaded in every position as of now, Compton said that there is still a debate in their camp on to how they will pick in the rookie draft.
“Its one of those things where the debate is do you draft by position or do you draft by talent, the best talent available. I don’t think we have decided that yet. We’ve been talking, even when I was in the US, coach Louie and I were talking. I’ve been talking to different people and reviewing some stuff. We have honestly not come to a decision to who is the guy we want. We studied stuff, we started practicing just this week, and we’ll see where were at as a team,” he said.
Compton, though, promised that whoever they select would not bear the burden of delivering right away for Alaska, as he said, “It’s a good thing for whoever comes to our team that there’s not going to be any pressure to carry us. I like our lineup and I like our guys. We have high quality players and high character players.”
But the 40-year-old bench tactician said that he is keeping an eye on the notable names in the Draft, as he said, “I think the guys that you read about a lot and the guys you look at, Ronald Pascual, Kevin Alas, (Chris) Banchero, (Matt) Rosser, Jake Pascual, Jericho Cruz, Kyle Pascual, you can go on. There’s a bunch of guys, sleepers, like (Prince) Caperal, (Rodney) Brondial, a few guys we’re looking at.”
“I’m more curious to see in the Rookie Draft, if guys will honor the process and go hard, or if when they scrimmage, they think they’re already made and don’t want to bring their best,” said Compton. “It’s always tough for me to view what I think are people’s efforts and character. In the next few days, we should have a better idea and then, we will really know how we’ll do it. We’ll have a ranking of the guys we want to pick, and if the top gets picked, we go on to the next.”
