When Kevin Alas was selected by second overall by Rain or Shine during the 2014 Gatorade PBA Draft, it was an instant and mini-reunion with an old chum back from Letran, center Raymond Almazan.
Almazan was drafted third overall by the Elasto Painters the previous year. Also on the team were assistant coaches Caloy Garcia and Mike Buendia who in the last two years have patrolled the sidelines for the Knights.
Alas says that all three have been very quick to welcome him to the fold including the latter two in spite of not playing for them in Letran during his final year of eligibility.
“Even if my dad was still the coach, I would have not played anymore,” explained Kevin. “The loss in the NCAA Finals was painful and I thought that was my goodbye to the school (Letran) as I planned on playing for Gilas already to help me for the next stage of my career.”
Despite being drafted along with his brother Jun Jun, Alas feels some sadness at some his former teammates in Jam Cortes and Ford Ruaya not selected by any PBA team.
“Those guys are my brothers,” described Kevin of his relationship with his former teammates. “I feel sad that their talent is not recognized. Hopefully, they will be given a chance.”
Having Almazan once more as a teammate is helping Kevin’s transition to the pros. His other Rain or Shine teammates have been most helpful as the young point guard looks to learn the skills, temperament, and diskarte of the trade. “Work hard lang at enjoy the game,” advised Almazan to his former and new teammate.
While Rain or Shine has a plethora of guards, it is only TY Tang and now, Alas, who are natural court generals. The others are combo guards.
“From the first day it has been a learning experience,” related Kevin. “I thought I know a lot already but there is so much more to learn.”
Of Coach Yeng Guiao, Alas said, “Ang maganda sa RoS is coach gives chances to everyone. Lahat nabibigyan ng opportunity. So everyone has to be ready to play pag tinawag ka. Ideal scenario for a rookie din to get a chance. I am looking forward to this PBA experience.”
