In terms of fanbase, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is still the hands down number one team.

The 24,883 gate attendance record set by the team in last season’s Philippine Cup semifinals decider against San Mig Coffee is proof enough.

But with another year of futility, it begs to be asked, is Ginebra losing its luster?

Team governor Alfrancis Chua believes otherwise.

“Almost pantay na kami ng San Mig,” said the feisty coach.

He added, “When we play Manila Clasico, pantay talaga. Siguro nakakalamang lang kami sa fans ng konti.”

It’s not helping the Kings that they have not won a title since the 2008 Fiesta Conference, and it’s evident that the fans have been clamoring for a return trip to the Finals and possibly a championship in the near future.

Chua shares the same sentiments, saying, “Lahat kami championship agad ang gusto. It depends lang kung ano ang mangyayari sa season. Ang hirap sabihin kung sino malakas kasi halos lahat pantay-pantay.”

But with a new season unfolding soon, Ginebra is hoping for a rebirth of their glory days, now that they have able bodies who are used to winning, led by their coach Jeffrey Cariaso.

“I need to talk to the team about our performances in our past few conferences. Nananalo kami and we get the high standings, but we always fail to advance,” the ponytailed PBA governor said.

“Hopefully, it’s a new beginning for us this season.” (RL)
