Asi Taulava and Greg Slaughter, among last season’s top performers with their exciting matchups, face off again as Barangay Ginebra and NLEX clash in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday.
Taulava capped a celebrated PBA return in gaining membership in the Mythical First Five while Slaughter had his own good tale, making the Mythical Second Team and winning the Rookie of the Year honors.
Slaughter is off to a better start this season with huge numbers in Ginebra’s 2-0 opening roll. But Taulava has a chance to pull even.
The Kings are the slight picks but Taulava and the Road Warriors are determined to turn the tables around and force a tie with Ginebra at 2-1.
NLEX debuted in the pro league with a 101-96 win over GlobalPort before suffering an 81-103 blowout at the hands of the Talk n Text Tropang Texters.
Meanwhile, the Kings were remarkably steady in their 101-81 drubbing of the Texters and in their 87-55 massacre of the Kia Sorento.
Japeth Aguilar and Slaughter both delivered big time against Talk n Text and Jay-R Reyes had his huge contribution, making Ginebra even tougher against Kia.
Taulava surely needs to get help from Rico Villanueva, Aldrech Ramos and KG Canaleta if they’re to contain Ginebra’s intimidating frontline threat.
It would help them if Macmac Cardona and Jonas Villanueva can put up the firepower in the backcourt.
NLEX carried over its D-League winning ways to its pro league debut, hitting big strides with its veteran recruits in the crunch as the Road Warriors trounced GlobalPort.
NLEX took a quick ride to the win-column as Taulava, Canaleta and Cardona showed up GlobalPort and its young stars Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle at endgame.
Taulava, the league’s oldest player at 41, played with boundless energy, delivering 12 of his 21 points in the last six minutes of play. (SB)
