IT’s final.

Filipino fans could expect the “invasion” of some of Asia’s best basketball players following the unanimous approval of the Asian reinforcements for this season’s Governors’ Cup.

Originally a brainchild of PBA chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, the Asian reinforcements, which is “experimental in nature”, will serve as “second imports” for the 12 teams that will spice up the season-ending third conference.

FEATURED STORIES

“This is clearly experimental on the part of the PBA, with the end in view of maximizing the marketing value of the PBA, not just within the country, but within the region,” Salud said after Thursday’s regular Board of Governors meeting held at the league’s office in Libis, Quezon City.

According to Salud, the Asian recruit should at least meet the following basic requirements: should not be taller tha  6-3, a natural-born player from his country of origin and has met  FIBA eligibility rules, in case the Asian player has dual citizenship.

Salud added that the Asian reinforcement is “optional” for all the 12-member teams.

Under the handicapping system approved in the Board planning session in Korea a month ago,  the top eight teams, which have the best aggregate records for the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup, are set to have imports with a 6-foot-5 limit, while the last four teams will be given the leeway to have imports of unlimited height.
