Hapee and Cagayan Valley continued their winning runs in the 2015 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup with contrasting victories Monday at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao.
Despite missing big men Arnold Van Opstal and Ola Adeogun, the Fresh Fighters rang in the New Year with a bang with a decisive 70-60 win over Racal Motors.
Troy Rosario came up big for Hapee with his 20 points and eight rebounds, stepping up in the absence of the two Fresh Fighters bigs, who both spent their time with their families overseas.
Garvo Lanete added nine markers, while Bobby Ray Parks was also instrumental in the victory, scoring six and dishing six assists for the undermanned Hapee squad.
“I thought our bigs collectively worked together defensively. Talagang outsized kami ng kalaban. Hirap kami sa rebounding, pero kumagat naman yung depensa lalo na sa second half,” said Hapee coach Ronnie Magsanoc, who only had nine players in scoring their ninth win of the conference.
Hapee bucked a slow first quarter and outscored Racal Motors, 23-12, in the second to take a 44-33 halftime edge, a lead that they would not surrender.
Jamil Ortuoste had 20 points for the Alibaba (2-7), while Ford Ruaya wounded up with 10, as Racal suffered its third straight defeat.
In the first game, Cagayan Valley followed Hapee to the semifinals as they got the second outright berth with an 89-78 victory over AMA University.
Abel Galliguez stabilized the fort for the Rising Suns as he came off the bench and got 11 of his 20 points in the payoff period to keep Cagayan Valley unscathed in eight games.
Leading by as much as 11 points in the third period, Cagayan saw its edge dwindle down to just three, 68-65, when James Martinez and Marcy Arellano joined forces to pull the Titans back in the game.
But Galliguez caught fire late, drilling three treys in the process to preserve Cagayan Valley’s immaculate 8-0 record, its second without suspended coach Alvin Pua.
“I felt I had a rhythm so I took more shots when I got the ball and scored more. Our mindset was to be aggressive and that’s what I did,” Galliguez said.
Martinez and Arellano both had 18 points for the Titans (3-6).
In the third game, Jumbo Plastic fanned their hopes for a quarterfinal berth by beating Tanduay Light, 68-59.
Philip Paniamogan showed the way for the Giants with his 14 points and four assists to carry Jumbo Plastic to solo fourth place with a 6-3 slate.
Jaymo Eguilos had a double-double with his 13 markers and 11 boards, while diminutive guard Mark Cruz also came up big with his 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Its sixth win in nine outings put Jumbo Plastic in prime position to snag the twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals provided it keeps its winning form.
Aljon Mariano led the Rhum Masters (4-5) with 19 points. (RL)
