It seems all Alex Cabagnot needed was a spot on the starting unit.

Tasked by coach Leo Austria to start the game, the 32-year-old playmaker rewarded his coach’s trust by catching fire early, scoring 16 points in the first half as San Miguel Beer jumped ahead and never looked back.

The Beermen took Game 4, 88-70 and equalized at 2-2 Wednesday behind Cabagnot’s 22 points.

Scorching hot from rainbow country early, he finished on a 4-of-10 shooting from three-point country to tow San Miguel to the win.

Cabagnot said that his Game 4 performance is his own way of atoning for his previous so-so games.

“I was playing sub-par for the first three games and I don’t want to say anything other than those shots went in tonight,” he said. “It’s God’s will today for those shots to go in. Yun din yung shots ko sa unang tatlo pero di pumapasok. Sana tuloy-tuloy na.”

Cabagnot believes that his insertion to the starting lineup was a bold move by coach Leo Austria in hopes of finding the right combination of guys on the floor.

“Sabi naman ni coach sa akin, he’s just tinkering with it,” he said.

Cabagnot added, “What I’d like to do for the coaching staff is to be ready, and today, talagang bwenas naman yung shots ko kasi pumasok. But whatever they think about tomorrow, whatever coach Leo plans, we just have to execute, not just for three quarters, but for the whole game.” (RL)
