“THIS IS LIKE A CHESS MATCH”
That’s how coach Leo Austria compared the championship series as it reached fever pitch.
San Miguel Beer could not make the most of its advantage and Alaska forced a winner-take-all Game 7 with an 87-76 win on Sunday.
“They adjusted well, so we’ll try to adjust in the next game. Sana yun ang trend,” said Austria.
The Beermen failed to capture the title on Sunday as they got outworked by the Aces.
“I think we know from the start that it’s not going to be easy,” Austria said. “We were outhustled in every department.”
Alaska outrebounded San Miguel, 57-46, and made its living in the paint, scoring 58 compared to the Beermen’s 22.
June Mar Fajardo was also limited to just nine points, a conference-low, and that’s something Austria would have to tediously work on before Wednesday. The presence of Fajardo in the paint is an edge the Beermen cannot afford not to capitalize on.
But Austria is just happy that their chances are still there.
“Luckily, we still have a chance. It’s a 50-50 chance,” he said, stressing that the fans will be treated to an exciting conclusion to a memorable first conference of the league’s 40th season come Wednesday.
“It’s good for the fans. Binigyan natin sila ng quality series. But we don’t know what will happen in Game 7.” (RL)
