MORE THAN A SECOND CHOICE
For Alaska Aces import DJ Covington, he believes that he’s more than just a plan B.
“I feel like I’m a good player. I do have something to prove but that comes in playing with hard work. It’s just another day at the office, I guess, and I’ll just keep on playing basketball,” he said.
When the Aces’ initial plan of bringing back Rob Dozier as their import for the Commissioner’s Cup fell through, Alaska flew in the 23-year-old Covington to be their reinforcement.
“I came here to do my job. I understand (Dozier) came in and played well before. It’s my first time here, so I understand that it’s more comfortable for many picking people who know how they’re going to play here already. But there’s no hard feelings for me,” he said.
“I’m here to do my job and play well, get along with my teammates and win games.”
Watching Alaska fight for the 2015 Philippine Cup with San Miguel in the Finals, the 6-foot-9 forward who last suited up with Excelsior Brussels in Belgium believes that he can blend in well once the second conference tips off.
“I’m really excited, they have a really good team,” Covington said. “I feel like I could jell with the team very well with my athleticism, my abilities. I think I have a lot to add to what they have already.”
But as always, there will be a chip on his shoulder given the track record Dozier had with the Aces.
And this early, Covington is setting the record straight.
“I’m more than a second choice.” (RL)
