Time to press the panic button?

After winning the Philippine Cup, San Miguel now finds itself languishing in the Commissioner’s Cup cellar with four setbacks in as many assignments, with its latest defeat dealt by Alaska, 100-107, on Tuesday.

“I think our game compared to our last three games is better, but still, we came up short,” said SMB coach Leo Austria. “We have to do something better, or else, we’re in danger.”

FEATURED STORIES

First up in the Beermen’s bid to barge into the win column and stay in contention is a change in imports, with Arizona Reid coming in for Ronald Roberts Jr.

“AZ will play in our next game against Meralco,” Austria said. “He was supposed to be our import for the third conference, but the situation needs him and maybe we can improve our decision-making from there.”

Reid has been granted a release by Rain or Shine and will suit up for the Beermen for the first time in his four stints in the PBA.

San Miguel can definitely lean on Reid’s talent and familiarity with the PBA in hopes of turning its fortunes around.

“Yung kanyang leadership and yung intelligence niya ang madadala niya dito,” Austria said.

The grizzled coach also acknowledges the tough challenge for them to qualify for the playoffs, but he’s still optimistic that the Beermen can get there with their remaining games.

“It’s hard to make it to the quarterfinals. We need five wins out of seven. We’ll try our best,” he said. (RL)
