TNT came out strong in the second quarter of Game 5, road the hot shooting of RDO and Ivan Johnson, and successfully kept ROS at bay in the payoff period. Behind great play on both ends of the floor (TNT forced 16 ROS turnovers), the Texters were able to dictate the tempo of the game and move within just one more win of the Commish Cup crown.
ROS saw great production from its top two players — Wayne Chism and Paul Lee — but there was hardly anything else from the other players on the team. Outside of Ryan Araña’s 10 points off the bench, there wasn’t really any marquee contributions. This is a disturbing trend, especially since Jeff Chan has been ruled out of the Finals.
Ang tanong ngayong Game 6 ay ito: Tuluyan na bang malalaglag ang ROS sa Finals at ibibigay ang kampiyonato sa TNT, o papalag pa ba ang ROS at itutulak ang serye patungong Game 7?
Here are some things to watch in this game:
- RANIDELIVERS
RDO has just been playing really well in the Finals, scoring 15 or more points in every game and, in particular, going bonkers in Games 4 & 5. He’s making more than 53% of his shots, including 2 treys a game while also finding other ways to contribute, especially on defense. If RDO can put up solid numbers again, TNT should have the upper-hand here.
Stats Games 1-3: 18.3ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.3bpg, 36.4 3pt%
Stats Games 4-5: 30.0ppg, 6.5rpg, 2.0bpg, 40.0 3pt%
- HELLBOY GETS IT DONE
Because of his demeanor and antics on and off the court, TNT import Ivan Johnson has earned the nickname Hellboy from PBA netizens. In Game 5, though, the Hell in Hellboy meant hella good, as Johnson played one of his most efficient games. He shot 63% from the field, made 3 triples, had 2 steals, and 2 blocks. In short, Hellboy played hella good, and if he can continue to do that, this may be over in Game 6.
Stats Games 1-4: 23.0ppg, 2 stls total, 1 blk total, 1.3 triples per game, 49.2 FG%
Game 5: 27pts, 2stls, 2blks, 3 triples, 62.5 FG%
- CASTRO THE FACILITATOR
Before Game 5, TNT was 4-0 when Castro handed out 7 or more assists. In Game 5, he dished out 9 dimes and chose to be a facilitator more than a scorer. He still got his buckets, of course, but by choosing to defer more than take over, Castro helped TNT become less predictable and helped some of his teammates gain more confidence. Castro the super scorer is pretty awesome, but, in some ways, Castro the facilitator seems a tad better.
Conference ave in assists: 5.1apg
Game 5: 9 assists
- LARRY LIGHTS IT UP
One difference maker for TNT in this series has been former Gilas Pilipinas wingman Larry Fonacier, who has really stepped up his game to help the Texters try to annex the crown. Fonacier has had an up-and-down conference, but his most recent performances have reminded PBA fans of just how good this guy can be.
Elims stats: 7.0ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.7apg, 1.3 triples per game, 37.9 FG%
Finals stats: 10.8ppg, 7.0rpg, 2.2apg, 2.0 triples per game, 42.5 FG%
Last 3 games: 12.7ppg, 7.0rpg, 1.7apg, 2 triples per game, 47.8 FG%
- BEST IMPORT, NOT THE BEST RESULT
Wayne Chism was named Best Import prior to Game 4, and he played like a deserving winner, but not even his sublime production could push ROS to a 3-2 series lead. Instead ROS is now on the brink of losing the series. Still, Chism should not let up, as he is extremely vital to the plans and machinations of Rain or Shine. I’m sure he would trade his Best Import award for the PBA Commish Cup crown.
Games 1-3: 32.0ppg, 14.3rpg, 2.7spg, 1.3bpg, 2.0 triples per game, 57.4 FG%
Games 4-5: 19.0ppg, 12.5rpg, 0.5spg, 1.0bpg, 1.5 triples per game, 35.7 FG%
- PAUL LEE: PLAYING THROUGH THE PAIN
One cannot help but admire Paul Lee, who played in Game 5 despite still being in pain from losing teeth in Game 3. Lee continues to be ROS’s best local player and has practically become the heart and soul of this team. Without a doubt, the Painters will continue to rely on Lee to, along with Wayne Chism, carry ROS to, hopefully for their fans, a Game 6 win.
Games 1-4: 16.8ppg, 3.8apg, 3.0 triples per game
Game 5: 19pts, 4rebs, 2 triples
- TURNOVER-PRONE
One big reason ROS lost today was the Painters’ ability to NOT take good care of the basketball. In Game 5, TNT just relentlessly pounced on ROS, forcing +9 more turnovers, which led to a +14 difference in TO pts in favor of TNT. If ROS continues to cough the ball up, they will have shot their chances down at forcing a Game 7.
ROS Games 1-4: 11.0 turnovers per game, 12.0 turnover pts allowed
ROS Game 5: 16 turnovers, 16 turnover pts allowed
Wayne Chism – 4 TOs
Chris Tiu – 3 TOs
- THAT SECOND QUARTER SURGE
The big kicker in Game 5 was the second quarter, where TNT outscored ROS, 31-13. ROS still put up quite a fight, but, in the end, they just couldn’t overcome the huge deficit. To prevent this from happening, ROS has to ensure that they don’t let up in any quarter in Game 6.
From InterAKSYON: “Talk ‘N Text took the game over completely in the second. Fonacier and Castro both hit some three-pointers, while Johnson hit on a drive to the basket as they went on a 15-3 run that gave them their first double-digit advantage of the game, 47-37.
The Tropang Texters took the quarter, 29-13, and carried a 14-point lead, 56-42, into the halftime break.”
- HISTORY LESSONS
TNT has a big chance to get the title, especially since they’re leading now, 3-2. TNT should be careful, however, since they’ve been in this position before only to eventually lose the series.
Official PBA stats guru Fidel Mangonon tweeted this after the game: “Has TNT ever lost a best-of-7 w/ a 3-2 lead? Yes, 4 times, 3 of them in the PBA Finals, the most recent in the 2007 Fiesta Finals vs. Alaska.”
ROS also has history against it as the team has never recovered from a 2-3 series deficit. They’ve been in this position before, too, and based on initial research, dehadong dehado ang ROS. Still, one silver lining is that coach Yeng Guiao has actually been able to fully recover from a 2-3 deficit to bolster his team’s chances from the jaws of defeat
10. MISSING JEFF CHAN
In recent developments, it has been reported that Gilas gunner Jeff Chan will no longer be able to play in the Finals. His plantar fasciitis continues to cause him a lot of pain, and his teammates will surely miss his “clutch” nature.
From InterAKSYON:
“Wala na si Jeff. The doctor has been trying to help him out with some injections on his foot to minimize the pain pero ‘yung last game tsaka ngayon ‘di na umeepekto yung injection so baka napunit na yung plantar fasciitis niya,” Guiao said.
This is a HUGE blow for ROS, of course, as Chan is the team’s default third option behind Chism and Lee. With Chan out, other guys like Ryan Araña and Chris Tiu will have to really play beyond themselves and help ROS square the series.
