At 6-2, Alaska looks headed to clinching a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

And for the coach who steers the ship, he’s happy with the way the team is responding this Governors’ Cup.

“I’m really happy tonight. We’re facing the top four teams right now for our final games but we’re playing admirably at this stage,” said coach Alex Compton.

Beating Meralco, 89-75, on Tuesday, the Aces are showing the spunk that was obviously absent last conference.

“It’s been a much better conference for us, but we play the top teams at the end of our schedule. It will be a good challenge,” Compton said.

Squaring off against Barako Bull, San Miguel and GlobalPort for its final three games, Alaska is just preparing itself for a tougher grind in the playoffs, a stage Compton knows is played at a much higher level.

“There’s no easy game. If you look at the next three teams we play, tatlong higante yun. And for our team that is not that big, it’s really about how can we not get dominated inside in the next three games,” he said. “If you want to go far this conference, you have to do well against the big imports and that’s what we have to face in this final three outings of ours.” (RL)
