Sent moving to his fourth team in just three years, Aldrech Ramos is preparing for a bigger role before he goes to Mahindra.
Training with Gilas Pilipinas in the offseason in hopes of cracking the final lineup bound for the Fiba Asia Championship in China next month, the 27-year-old has continued to work hard and hone his skills before he joins the expansion team, which is aching to have a better showing, in the 41st season.
But if there’s something Ramos learned in the PBA, he knows nothing is easy in the pro leagues.
“Yun ang sabi nila sa akin, na mas malaki yung magiging role ko. Pero syempre kailangan ko pa rin i-earn yun. Di naman binibigay yun,” said Ramos, whose previous role with his former team NLEX is to space the floor for Asi Taulava.
(That’s what they told me, that I’ll have a bigger role. But of course, I need to earn it. It’s something that isn’t given.)
Though, the trade caught Ramos by surprise, he took it like a true professional.
“Part naman yun siguro ng profession ng basketball player. Hindi mo naman handle lahat yun so ok lang.”
(It’s part of being in the profession of a basketball player. It’s something that I can’t handle so it’s fine.)
Ramos, who was part of the three-team deal that sent second overall pick Troy Rosario to Talk ‘N Text, is expected to do the same for the Enforcers and act as a floor spacer but the big difference is that the former Far Eastern University star will be one of the leaders of the young squad.
He also hopes that his experience with the national team can help him be more of a leader for his new teammates.
“Malaking bagay ito, lalo na’t bata yung team (This is a big help, more so that the team is very young),” he said.
“Actually kaming dalawa ni KG (Canaleta), tutulungan namin yung team. Kung anong maibibigay namin sa team, ishe-share namin sa kanila.”
(Actually, it’s both of me and KG, we’ll help the team. Whatever we can bring, we will share with them.)
