PJ Simon excited to see fellow Mindanaoans Amer, Thompson blaze their own trails
With the new blood coming into the league, Peter June Simon is ecstatic that his fellow Mindanaoans are finding their way to the PBA.
Ginebra draftee Earl Scottie Thompson from Digos and Meralco rookie Baser Amer from Davao banner the new crop of players raring to parade their wares in the league. Thompson, the reigning NCAA MVP, was a projected third overall pick, slipped to fifth while San Beda’s chief point guard Amer was really the player the Bolts were looking at as the seventh selection.
And for Simon, he can’t help but look back at his humble beginnings before he made it to the big league.
“Sobrang happy ako sa kanila kasi katulad lang din nila akong nangangarap dati sa probinsya,” the Makilala, North Cotabato-born Simon said.
The former University of Mindanao standout also admitted that the talent level of Thompson and Amer is a cut above the other newbies.
“Nakita kong iba talaga yung skills nila ngayon at ready talaga sila sa PBA.”
The Star Hotshots guard bared that he had a chance to talk to the two individually on draft day, and is just proud to be a trail blazer for fellow Mindanaoans, who are not only hoping to make it to the PBA but also have their own imprint like Simon.
“Sobrang sarap ng feeling kasi parang nao-open mo yung door sa mga kababayan namin. Napakasarap sa pakiramdam na galing ka sa province at makakagawa ka ng impact dito kasi the best of the best na ito eh,” he said. “Hopefully, ganun din sila and nakikita ko yung potential nila maging star in the future.”
