Alas using his injury as motivation in his return to NLEX
Kevin Alas had his rookie year in the PBA cut short with an ankle injury that forced him to miss the entire PBA Governors’ Cup.
Alas’ final game before the season-ending injury also turned out to be the last time he wore a Talk ’N Text jersey after he was shipped to NLEX in the offseason as part of the blockbuster deal that sent Troy Rosario to the Tropang Texters.
The former Letran star said the injury only pushed him to be better.
“Itong injury, naging motivation na lang din para sa akin. Siguro may kailangan pa akong palakasin. Tinitingnan ko na lang yung brighter side of things,” said Alas, who will be fully recovered before the 41st PBA Season comes off wraps on Oct. 18.
And while most players wouldn’t like being traded, Alas said he sees it as a new challenge. It also helped that he was traded to the Road Warriors, a team he’s very familiar with.
“Familiar na ako sa system ni coach Boyet. Ang adjustment na lang siguro is sa mga teammates ko kasi yung iba, ngayon ko pa lang makakasama eh,” he said.
Before turning pro, Alas won championships as part of NLEX under the same coach in Boyet Fernandez in the PBA D-League where he also bagged an MVP award.
Apart from Fernandez, Alas also reunited with his good friend Garvo Lanete, who is likewise, a former D-League MVP with NLEX before getting selected by the Road Warriors in the Rookie Draft last month.
“Happy ako na magkakasama ulit kami. But we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Alas said. “Galing ako sa Talk ‘N Text kaya sana madala ko yung experience ko dun.”
