PBA launches Women’s 3×3 invitational tournament

Constantly working to the expand the game, the Philippine Basketball Association is bringing women’s basketball to the league.

For the 41st Season of the PBA, the Women’s 3-on-3 Invitational Tournament will be a regular fixture on certain game days.

“The PBA is looking to expand and one of the most exciting areas we’ve looked at is in women’s basketball. We believe that there is a lot of potential here and that the 3×3 is a market test,” said PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa.

“We hope that we can make it a regular product for the pba and we will work hard to make this event very exciting.”

The Filipinos have been excelling in 3×3 competitions so far, most recently the Fiba 3×3 World Tour Manila Masters.

The PBA Women’s 3×3 matches will be held every Wednesday and Friday in the respective game venues.

The tournament is open to players aged 18-25 who have already played competitive organized basketball (can be varsity, corporate or amateur players). Teams are composed of maximum of four players.

A minimum of 6 to 7 teams for a single round robin and a maximum of 8 teams for 2 brackets. The top four teams move on to a crossover semifinals with the winners squaring off in a best-of-three finals series.

For each game, the team to score more points in 10 minutes or first to score 15 points is declared the winner. In the case of an overtime, first to score (2) two points wins the game.

A cash prize of P50,000 awaits the champion team of the inaugural 3×3 tournament.
