Ginebra survives Team Grand Slam in Hoops for a Cause
Legends from the Grand Slam-winning 1996 Alaska Milkmen and 2014 San Mig Coffee joined forces to clash against the Ginebra squad composed of current players and Gin King greats.
Ginebra rode the hot shooting of Allan Caidic and got a 20-point lead, before Team Grand Slam clawed its way back and got to as close as one in the final two minutes.
Johnny Abarrientos, unfortunately, missed on his potential game-winning floater with 2.1 seconds left on the clock before the Ginebra-dominated crowd rose in victory.
“It was fun out there, watching Bong (Hawkins) hitting shots, Johnny in all of his wizardry, and on our side, Allan hitting all of those threes. Just remembering how good those guys were, it was really fun out there,” said coach Tim Cone.
Proceeds from the charity game will benefit San Miguel great Samboy Lim; former Purefoods guard Roger Yap, whose house was razed by fire; and the daughter of former Milkmen Rhoel Gomez, who is suffering from cancer.
Cone also said that SMC president Ramon S. Ang has pledged to match the funds raised in the charity event.
