Barako Bull lost its hold on a twice-to-beat advantage following its setback to Alaska, but its head coach Koy Banal doesn’t mind not having that edge heading into the quarterfinals.
“We will try to be ready, try to give them a good fight, try to stay as close as we can,” Banal said after their 108-100 loss to the Aces on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. “We will try to salvage an upset.”
Barako Bull finished the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup eliminations with a 5-6 record and with Ginebra beating TNT the following night, the Energy were pitted against the fifth-seeded GlobalPort Batang Pier, who will have a twice-to-beat bonus.
Despite the missing out on the incentive, Banal said the Energy have picked up something from the loss and the twice-to-beat advantage was something they did not want to think about too much.
“Well even before the start of the game, I just want to be consistent here, we don’t really dwell on that twice-to-beat advantage,” Banal said. “We believe whatever happens, win or lose, we will gain something out of that.”
Alaska was well on its way to a blowout, up 16, 68-52, late in the third quarter before Barako Bull rallied to within two, 92-90, down the stretch.
“We gained something despite the loss,” Banal said. “They (Alaska) will help us get ready for the playoffs.”
“The players did not give up, we were down 13 in the fourth and we trimmed it to two. That was the positive thing. It’s basketball, whoever stops playing will lose.”
